Northanger Abbey is Jane Austen’s freest and most unorthodox work. Although it was her first work, fate and a negligent editor made it appear as though it was published posthumously. This is relevant, because in a way Northanger Abbey is the Quixote of ghost novels, because of the attitude of the protagonist Catherine Morland, a fanciful young woman fascinated by reading gothic novels who wants to experience adventures and mysteries while her surroundings only care about finding her a suitable husband, as per the hilarious parody of novels of this genre. All this translates into a work so full of literary references as a source of inspiration and enjoyment for new generations of readers.
